Adventurous New Jazz From Jazzwerkstatt and Naxos of America

Jazzwerkstatt and Naxos of America, Inc. Announce U.S. Rollout of New CD Releases & Catalog

Naxos of America, Inc. and German jazz label Jazzwerkstatt announce the U.S. distribution of their catalog, including November 2010 releases by The Dave Liebman Group, the Perry Robinson Trio, The Ullmann/Swell 4, and Chris Dahlgren & Lexicon.

Jazzwerkstatt is a name that has a fine tradition deriving from the “Jazzwerkstatt Peitz”, which once was the biggest jazz festival in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) outside of Berlin. In the early ‘70s, the festival was organized by Ulli Blobel and Peter ‘Jimi’ Metag. Jazzwerkstatt Berlin-Brandenburg is picking up where the original left off. In 2008, a new annual festival was started in Berlin “A EUROPEAN JAZZ JAMBOREE”.

Jazzwerkstatt’s next logical step was to start its own label to complement the concerts, whose line-ups have included big names like Max Roach, David Murray, Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron, and others. In addition, historic radio broadcasts from Peitz in the GDR – which featured musicians such as Conny Bauer, Gianluigi Trovesi, Dietmar Diesner, and Tony Oxley – will be released on the label along with recordings from the concerts of Jazzwerkstatt.

JazzWerkstatt Wien (Jazz Workshop Vienna) was established in 2004 by Daniel Riegler, Peter Rom, Bernd Satzinger, Clemens Wenger, Wolfgang Schiftner, and Clemens Salesny. To document and distribute the musical output of this initiative, JazzWerkstatt Records was founded the following year. The unorthodox approach to jazz and improvised music of this new generation of Austrian composers and musicians produces a wide scope of artistry – work that transcends outdated genre classification, work that expresses the current Zeitgeist, or spirit of the times.

The November 16, 2010 Releases:

THE DAVE LIEBMAN GROUP
TURNAROUND / THE MUSIC OF ORNETTE COLEMAN
“In Ornette’s music there is a joyful spirit which permeates throughout and explains why people love his art as they do. His music expresses an irrepressible joie de vivre, uplifting and mournful at the same time, playful and deadly serious-a full view of the human condition. With deep respect to a true individualist and master of his art, I hope you enjoy our Ornette Coleman voyage.” -- Dave Liebman, September 2009

THE ULLMANN/SWELL 4
NEWS? NO NEWS!
“The voice coming from The Ullmann/Swell Quartet is saying listen, feel, and become the goal in these sonic excursions is to explore music in all of its moods, colors and shapes. There is also a strong investment in silence, space, and texture. The compositions are delivered in ten installments, four pieces written by Gebhard Ullmann, two collective composed pieces and four songs composed by Steve Swell.” -- William Parker, April 9, 2009

PERRY ROBINSON TRIO
FROM A TO Z
“Perry Robinson is a musician’s musician. He has been one of the most productive protagonists of the jazz scene for over half a century, and his creativity is still in demand internationally. If the public at large is less aware of his name than of his colleagues Ornette Coleman and Carla Bley, the reason may be that his instrument, the clarinet, is associated with the heyday of Benny Goodman, the king of swing. But Robinson’s roots run far deeper. They reach back into folk and blues, the ground water of American music, and to a time long before the division into old-time vs. avant-garde and black vs. white. This is the basis out of which, over the decades, a mighty trunk grew up and put out a crown of widely spreading branches. In other words, Perry Robinson tells living stories in that most universal of languages, music. From A to Z...” -- Tobias Richtsteig

CHRIS DAHLGREN & LEXICON
MYSTIC MAZE
“The music of “Mystic Maze” is based upon a selection written critiques against the music of the great composer Béla Bartók, who lived from 1881-1945. I wanted, in my own way, to vilify some of the very critics who judged Bartók’s incredible music so harshly by turning their own words against them- in other words, to turn their words into music.” – Chris Dahlgren

The Jazzwerkstatt label releases recordings from three sources:

1. Recordings from the archives of the East German broadcaster Rundfunk der DDR. These excellent recordings of exceptional Jazzwerkstatt Peitz concerts were made in the1980s. In most cases, the lineup was either brought together exclusively for Jazzwerkstatt Peitz or the musicians just got together for impromptu sessions.

2. Recordings of Jazzwerkstatt Berlin-Brandenburg concerts. Plenty of the jazz world’s big names have played in Berlin since jazzwerkstatt was first established and many of these concerts were recorded by the regional broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. The JazzWerkstatt label has released some of these recordings on CD and DVD.

3. Our third and most important mainstay are our recordings of Berlin-based musicians. At Jazzwerkstatt we devote most of our attention to the Berlin jazz scene – this enables local musicians to make quality recordings in a professional studio without being under pressure of time, whilst also offering them the facilities of a professional label.

FRONTIERS RECORDS Gains New Grounds In The USA

Frontiers Records has announced that Derek Shulman and 2Plus Music Entertainment have agreed to oversee the label development and marketing over the North American market.

After an internationally acknowledged career as singer for the progressive music band GENTLE GIANT, Derek Shulman became involved in the recording business in the early '80s. He then went on to become President of Roadrunner Records, overseeing signings like SLIPKNOT and NICKELBACK.

2Plus directors, internationally renowned music impresario Leonardo Pavkovic and CFO Lawrence Offsey, join him in this endeavour.

2Plus will coordinate artist acquisition and marketing for Frontiers in North America and will represent the label in the relationship with the local distributors and promoters.

Frontiers Records label President Serafino Perugino stated, "Working with 'the professor' Derek Shulman has been nothing but a joy so far. His experience and wisdom are going to guide Frontiers Records growth to the next level and we are absolutely excited to share with him and 2Plus a vision for the future growth of Frontiers in the North American market."

Derek Shulman stated: "I am extremely excited about being involved with Serafino and Frontiers Records. It is very gratifying to work with people who are music fans and yet understand the dynamics of the ever-changing music business model. Frontiers Records is committed to making the leap to become the premiere independent rock music company worldwide. I am very happy to lend my experience to my friends at Frontiers to realize this goal."

Tinyfish To Play Rosfest 2011

TINYFISH ANNOUNCED FOR ROSFEST 2011

Tinyfish is a five-piece band based in South London (and Reading and Maidstone and Gothenburg, Sweden) with a deep and abiding interest in all forms of progressive music. The group formed in 2005 as part of an informal collective of musicians who enjoyed playing the acoustic open mic spots of London (UK).

Although profoundly influenced by the UK progressive scene, the band was keen to break from as many of the traditional prog clichés as possible. "I would die of boredom if I thought we were just recycling the songs and sound of the 70's" said lead singer and songwriter Simon Godfrey. To that end, Tinyfish chose to write and perform without the aid of a keyboard player, using guitar synths, electronic percussion and a myriad of special effects to obtain their distinctively melodic sound. "It forces us to think differently and keep away from musical comfort zones" adds lyricist Robert Ramsay.

Upon releasing their eponymous debut album in 2007, Tinyfish undertook their first UK tour to promote the release. Both the tour and the album were hailed as a great success with Classic Rock magazine naming it as one of the top 15 albums of the year.

In 2008 the band signed to respected progressive label F2 Records worldwide and they began work upon on their follow up album "The Big Red Spark". In 2009 they released an EP of rare material and a live DVD filmed in Poland.

2010 has now seen the release of "The Big Red Spark" which has already garnered critical acclaim, prompting an unprecedented (for a Progressive Rock album) 9/10 from Classic Rock Magazine's Geoff Barton. There has also been a welcome return to the Summer's End festival and finally the confirmation that drummer Leon Camfield has joined the band as a full-time and permanent member.

Guitarist Jim Sanders sums up Tinyfish so far: "We've come a long way from a bunch of friends jamming in a loftspace for fun. We're very pleased by how much success the band has encountered in such a short period of time but the only important goal for Tinyfish is whatever comes next."

Tinyfish are thrilled and flattered to have been asked to play at RoSfest in May 2011 and can't wait to perform in front of a North American audience for the first time.

Carl Palmer States No More Reunion Shows For ELP

FROM CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINES DAVE LING:

Carl Palmer has told Classic Rock that, so far as he is concerned, Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 40th anniversary reunion gig at this summer’s High Voltage Festival will be the trio’s final appearance together.
We asked the drummer whether, after 12 years away, it was difficult to reactivate the beast.

“Well, for reasons I won’t go into it’s always hard to rev it up. We rehearsed for it for a month, which almost killed me. Not the physical side of it, just keeping interested. Me personally, I didn’t need a month. But that’s what we did, and when it came to the gig what you saw was what you got. That’s as good as it will ever be (again). Everyone seemed pretty happy with it, and I think that gig will be far as the three of us can take things.”

After so long away, standing at the side of the stage how did it feel to go on there and do it again? Was there some anxiety?

“Not from me, I’m not the nervous type. I play all the time,” Palmer responded. “Greg (Lake) and Keith (Emerson), on the other hand, were highly nervous and that was part of the problem though they both did the best they could. I looked at it not exactly as just another festival, but well… Asia have played more than 200 gigs since the reunion, and of course I’ve also got my own band. For me, like I said, it was the month’s rehearsal and not the gig that really frustrated me.”

If you missed the band’s High Voltage farewell then do not panic. A DVD of the event is being put together.

“We’ve been doing some overdubs and there will also be an audio CD, but it’s looking really good,” reveals Palmer. “And that’s about it, really. There are no plans to do anything else, not from my perspective anyway. I’ve let the other two know that. Being the 40th anniversary, it seemed a great way to finish things. Let’s just leave it there.”

Palmer tours the UK with Asia throughout December. For details go to:

EVERGREY To Headline 'Rockin' The Galaxy' Cruise

Swedish metallers EVERGREY will headline the Rockin' The Galaxy cruise, which will leave the Stockholm, Sweden port on November 25 for Åbo, Finland, and return the following day. Other acts scheduled to perform on the cruise — which will be held aboard the Tallink-Silja ship Galaxy — include BAI BANG, SYSTEMATIC SLAUGHTER and DEFUELED.

The purpose of the Rockin' The Galaxy cruise is to provide ambitious and talented rock bands an opportunity to showcase their talent to a new and wider audience, much larger than they are accustomed to. 25 different bands — both established and unknown — will perform during the 24-hour rockin' cruise from Stockholm to Åbo and back. Two stages will be rigged, a huge main stage for bands attracting larger crowds and a smaller club scene for newer talent on the rise. The music genre ranges from rock, hard rock, metal to death metal. There will be several different and exciting competitions held during the cruise with great prizes including loads of music equipment donated by Club Centurion sponsors. At the end of the cruise, the eight best guitarists will also compete in a Guitar Battle.
