FATES WARNING Taps Drummer MIKE PORTNOY For Brazil Show

U.S. progressive metal icons FATES WARNING have tapped Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, TRANSATLANTIC, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) to play drums for the band for their first-ever visit to South America as special guests for QUEENSRŸCHE in São Paulo, Brazil on April 14.

Commented FATES WARNING: "We're pleased and excited to announce that Mike Portnoy will be our special guest drummer for our April 14th show in São Paulo, Brazil. We had a great time playing with Mike back in 2005 at the Headway festival in Holland and we're happy that he's able to help us out again. We'd also like to make it clear that Bobby Jarzombek is still the drummer for FATES and will be with us for our European shows in March as well as on the new record we're currently working on. Unfortunately, Bobby committed to another gig on the same day (ironically, in the same city) before this show was planned."

The "Parallels" lineup of FATES WARNING played a number of shows in 2010 in support of the released special edition of the album, which was made available through Metal Blade Records. In addition to remastered audio, there is a second audio disc of live
and demo material. The package also includes a DVD with nearly three
hours of material, including a complete live show from the 1992 "Parallels" tour and a documentary on the making of "Parallels" which includes live, studio, and current day interview footage with all the band members, Terry Brown (producer) and Brian Slagel (CEO of Metal Blade Records).

InsideOut Music in 2005 released a FATES WARNING DVD entitled "Live In Athens". The DVD shot was on February 20, 2005 at Gagarin in Athens, Greece and was mixed by Bill Metoyer (SLAYER, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM).

FATES WARNING's latest CD, "X", was released in 2004 on Metal Blade Records. The follow-up to 2000's "Disconnected" was recorded at Carriage House studios in Stamford, Connecticut and features cover artwork by renowned record-cover artist Ioannis (DREAM THEATER, SEPULTURA, DEEP PURPLE, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, KING CRIMSON, BIOHAZARD, VOIVOD, UFO, OVERKILL).

ÅKERFELDT/WILSON Collaboration Features 'Hardly Any Drums And No Distorted Guitars'

During a recent online question-and-answer session with fans, PORCUPINE TREE's Steven Wilson was asked to clarify his previous statement that the musical output of STORM CORROSION, his much-anticipated collaboration project with OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt will be "the opposite of metal."

"It's very hard to describe this music as it is so different from most things around right now (at least as far as I know)," Wilson explained. "I said it was the 'opposite of metal' because I think a lot of people might have assumed from the two people involved that this
would be some kind of progressive/metal thing, but in fact it's quite a
minimal album with a lot of space and beauty, orchestral and organic,
hardly any drums and no distorted guitars — 'twisted beautiful' is the
best way I can describe it."

STORM CORROSION last year completed work on its self-titled debut album for a tentative April release through Roadrunner Records. Apart from Mikael and Steven, the CD includes guest appearances by Gavin Harrison (PORCUPINE TREE) on drums/percussion, Ben Castle on woodwinds and Dave Stewart on string arrangements.

In an interview with Metal Injection conducted on November 11, 2011 at the Best Buy Theater in New York City, Wilson was asked how STORM CORROSION is different from his previous collaborations with Åkerfeldt. "Well, the only stuff I've collaborated with Mikael on in the past has been working on his records," Wilson replied. "This is obviously a collaboration, so it's a different
approach. We sat in a room together and we wrote music together, rather
than taking his music that he'd already written and working it into a
record. We actually started from the very basics — composition and
arranging."

He continued, "If you'd asked me three months ago
about the music, I would have said, 'Expect the last thing you would
expect.' But actually, now that [OPETH's new record] 'Heritage' has come out and [Steven Wilson's solo album] 'Grace Of Drowning' has come out, I don't think it's going to be that much of a shock to
people, because it's almost like a third part of the trilogy, in a way.
If anything, it's even more orchestral, even more stripped down, even
more dark, twisted and melancholic… but it certainly feels like it comes from the same place as 'Heritage' and 'Grace For Drowning', which indeed it does because it was written during the same period — it was written during a period that he was playing the tracks that he'd
written for 'Heritage' and I was playing the tracks that I had written for 'Grace Of Drowning'. So we were kind of, in a way, egging each other on, encouraging each
other to do those particular records, but also at the same time coming
up with this music that is now gonna be on STORM CORROSION. So
it's a very orchestral record, it's very — as you'd expect — epic, the
songs are quite long and they develop in quite unusual ways."

He
concluded, "I'm realistic that half the people are gonna hate it and
half the people probably will fall in love with it. I'd be happy with
that anyway."

Although former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy was initially supposed to be part of the STORM CORROSION project, he did not take part in the recording sessions for the CD. "To be honest, there's just no room for drums on what we've done," Åkerfeldt told Classic Rock magazine last year. "I called Mike up, and he was cool about it. He's got so much going on anyway, and I'm sure we will work together in the future."

TC Electronic Announces JOHN PETRUCCI Signature Pedal

Long-time TC guitar effects user John Petrucci (DREAM THEATER) has joined forces with TC Electronic, taking their collaboration to a whole new level.

Petrucci was one of the first artists to join TC's revolutionary TonePrint concept. In total, John created five personal TonePrints in early 2011 — two for Corona Chorus, two for Shaker Vibrato and one for the Vortex Flanger. John loved having access to all effect parameters so much that he instantly agreed to develop a signature pedal together with TC — one that was based on his own TonePrints. And so The Dreamscape was born.

John wanted to gather all of his TonePrints into a single pedal even though
his original TonePrints are for three different pedals in the series.
Therefore, his new signature pedal contains no less than three
mind-blowing modulation effects that have been painstakingly tailored
with an eye on even the tiniest detail by the master himself. To take
this pedal over the top, John even created a brand new TonePrint
for Vortex Flanger taking the total amount of custom-tweaked tones up to six — 2 x chorus, 2 x flanger and 2 x Vibrato.

Further, there is a TonePrint setting for uploading or beaming other TonePrints to the pedal. In short, for all John Petrucci and DREAM THEATER fans, this pedal is a must-have, and for anybody else, it is a clever
way of getting three top-notch modulation effects in a compact pedal
that will only take up a minimum of real estate on their pedal boards.

The
Dreamscape has four knobs: Speed, Depth, FX Level and one that chooses
between the six integrated signature tones and one additional TonePrint.
Further, the pedal has a three-way switch for toggling between Bright,
Normal and Dark, which is an overall tonal shaping feature chosen by Petrucci. Finally, The Dreamscape also contains all of the great features
included in other TonePrint pedals such as true bypass,
one-screw-battery-access and a sturdy design made for life on the road.

John Petrucci will be visiting three Guitar Center stores in Manhattan (March 30), Central Chicago (March 31) and San
Francisco (April 1), introducing The Dreamscape. These in-store
appearances will give musicians the opportunity to hear Petrucci unlock
the power of The Dreamscape, take a photo and also get The Dreamscape
signed by Petrucci.

The Dreamscape is exclusively available at Guitar Center in the U.S., and can be pre-ordered at GuitarCenter.com in early February. and will also be available in the three stores mentioned above on March 16.

For die-hard Petrucci fans, picking up The Dreamscape online or at one of these exclusive Guitar Center locations ahead of time or online, is a must as Petrucci will only be signing The Dreamscape at these in-store appearances. In Canada, Long & McQuade will be the exclusive dealer for The Dreamscape. In the rest of the world, Dreamscape will be available February 2012.

The Dreamscape Main Features

* Six Signature Tones Tailored by John Petrucci
* One Brand New Flanger TonePrint
* Three Mind-blowing Modulation Effects in One Pedal: Chorus, Flanger and Vibrato
* Corona Chorus TonePrints Are Available as The Dreamscape TonePrints

Longtime RUSH Photographer Dies

Longtime RUSH friend and photographer Andrew MacNaughtan died of a heart attack while on assignment with the band in Los Angeles.

In a statement, the members of the group said, "We're deeply shocked and
heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of our close friend and
longtime photographer, Andrew MacNaughtan. He was a sweet person and a very talented artist. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed."

MacNaughtan, a four-time Juno Award winner (for RUSH, OUR LADY PEACE, Tom Cochrane and Jann Arden), had worked with RUSH as a photographer and videographer since the 1980s.

MacNaughtan travelled to Tanzania and Kenya in November 2010 with the purpose of
capturing the spirit and beauty of the landscapes, wildlife and people to raise funds for the prevention, care and advocacy of children in HIV/AIDS-affected regions. The idea to use these photographs in a book was taken a step further when MacNaughtan enlisted the help of friends in the recording industry to lend poetic voice to the images. More than 30 artists including Celine Dion, Michael Bublé, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, Bryan Adams, Annie Lennox, Daniel Lanois, Hedley, Bruce Cockburn, Fefe Dobson, Ed Robertson, Jann Arden, Serena Ryder, Lights, Nikki Yanofsky and Tom Cochrane, to name a few, graciously provided commentary to photos that inspired them.

Through ArtGivesHope, a charity founded by MacNaughtan in 2006, the sales of the limited edition images and book support World Vision's Hope Program.

ARCH/MATHEOS Announces Only U.S. Show

ARCH/MATHEOS — the new progressive rock band featuring FATES WARNING/OSI guitarist Jim Matheos and former FATES WARNING singer John Arch — will play its only U.S. show on May 5 at the Webster Theater in Hartford, Connecticut.

ARCH/MATHEOS last year filmed a video for the song "Midnight Serenade" with director David Brodsky of MyGoodEye (DEVIN TOWNSEND, HELMET, IN THIS MOMENT). The track comes off the group's debut album, "Sympathetic Resonance", which sold around 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week
of release. The CD landed at No. 13 on the Top New Artist Albums
(Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and
developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top
100 of The Billboard 200.

"Sympathetic Resonance" entered the official chart in Germany at No. 27, in Austria at No. 67, and in Switzerland at No. 78.

The cover art for "Sympathetic Resonance" was fashioned using an image created by light painting photographer Dennis Calvert, who has described light painting as "The ability to see in four
dimensions, time traveling, and creating fantasy using only what we base all reality on, light."

Released on September 13, 2011 via Metal Blade Records, "Sympathetic Resonance" features the following track listing:

01. Neurotically Wired
02. Midnight Serenade
03. Stained Glass Sky
04. On the Fence
05. Any Given Day (Strangers Like Me)
06. Incense and Myrrh

ARCH/MATHEOS features an all-star lineup, including the talents of Joey Vera (ARMORED SAINT, ANTHRAX, FATES WARNING, SEVEN WITCHES) on bass, Bobby Jarzombek (HALFORD, FATES WARNING, SEBASTIAN BACH, RIOT) on drums, and Frank Aresti (FATES WARNING) on additional lead guitar.

Comments Matheos: "I think John and I work really well together. There's a lot of mutual respect and
trust in what we do. But we're also both very critical of ourselves, and each other. This can make for a long and sometimes tedious process. But ultimately it's one I enjoy because I think it brings out the best in
both of us."

ARCH/MATHEOS recording lineup:

* John Arch (FATES WARNING) - Vocals
* Jim Matheos (FATES WARNING, OSI) - Guitar
* Joey Vera (ARMORED SAINT, ANTHRAX, FATES WARNING, SEVEN WITCHES) - Bass
* Bobby Jarzombek (HALFORD, FATES WARNING, SEBASTIAN BACH, RIOT) - Drums
* Frank Aresti (FATES WARNING) - Additional Lead Guitar

JANUARY NEWS BYTES

LANA LANE To Release "El Dorado Hotel"

After a four-year break since her last album, Lana Lane is back with her most powerful release to date, "El Dorado Hotel." The veteran symphonic rock diva delivers a 10-song tour-de-force of finely crafted original tracks in an audiophile production by husband/keyboardist, Erik Norlander. "El Dorado Hotel" hosts Lane's usual broad spectrum of musical styles and genres with a cohesiveness that fans of the artist will recognize instantly.

The musicians of "El Dorado Hotel" are a top-notch group of artists including both new and familiar faces. Lane says about the musicians, "Both Freddy DeMarco and Mark Matthews did some fantastic work on Erik’s solo project, “The Galactic Collective”. I then had the opportunity to play with them both during some live appearances in 2011 when I sang with the band. After having played with the guys and getting to know them, I knew that I wanted them to be a part of this project as well. Then for John Payne, Jay Schellen, Guthrie Govan and Bruce Bouillet (ex-Racer X), as you know, Erik has been playing with John Payne for about 5 years now. When the original 1982 lineup of ASIA reformed a few years back, John Payne formed his own separate band to continue all the work that he had done with ASIA during his 14-year run and many albums with them. So John and Erik tour as “ ASIA Featuring John Payne,” and they have probably played over a hundred shows together. Jay is the drummer in the band, and both Guthrie and Bruce have been the guitarists. Bruce is working with them currently. I of course go to a lot of their shows and have become friends with all of them. It is a great group of people, and they are all very talented musicians. Since we see them so much and Erik plays with them constantly, it was only natural to work with them on this album. And then finally for Mark McCrite, Neil Citron and Don Schiff, all three of them have been on so many Lana Lane albums going all the back to my very first album in 1995. It’s great to continue working with them through all these years."

Believe Reveal Title And Artwork Of Their Forthcoming DVD

In late March/early April, Metal Mind Productions will release second live DVD by Believe – an outstanding art-rock act formed by the guitarist Mirek Gil – the former leader and composer of Polish prog-rock legend Collage. The material entitled “Seeing Is Believing” was recorded in November 2011 in Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice, Poland. During this unique evening Believe primarily presented material from their most recent studio album „World Is Round” (Metal Mind Productions, 2010).

And today the band reveal the cover artwork of „Seeing Is Believing”.

Karol Wróblewski, the band's vocalist comments the project: “The picture was taken at Wyspianski Theatre during the filming of the concert for the purposes of this DVD release. We made no suggestions to its author and we decided to give him absolute artistic freedom. That's how the magical, impressionist image that captures the essence of the title ‘Seeing Is Believing’ was made. Vivid colors, Karol's silhouette, and the mysterious atmosphere perfectly reflect what happened on that evening on the theatre's stage. And believe me, the atmosphere of the concert was outstanding. We're all the more satisfied about the cover because it reminds us of a movie poster... Because that DVD is a true documentary about us and our music. The picture was taken by our friend - Sławek Haratym. We've been cooperating with him for a couple of years now and he keeps surprising us with his creativity. We knew that he wouldn't let us down this time as well. We're very proud of his latest work.”

Live Strawberry Fields Forthcoming DVD

Strawberry Fields, a rock band formed in 2008 by a highly acclaimed musician Wojtek Szadkowski (Collage, Satellite, Peter Pan), return with their first live DVD entitled “Live Strawberry Fields”. The material included on the DVD was recorded on the 20th of April 2011, at Silesian Theatre in Katowice, Poland, were the band presented to their audience their very own, unique, subtly simple, magic and, at times, trip-hop-like brand of prog music, crowned with Robin’s – the band’s lead singer’s – mesmerizing, sensual voice. The band in the line-up: Wojtek Szadkowski (drums), Robin (vocal), Sarhan Kubeisi (guitars), Jarek Michalski (bass), Krzysztof Palczewski (keys) and Michał Kirmuć (guitar) presented their fans with a musical feast by performing songs from Strawberry Fields’ debut album “Rivers Gone Dry” as well as one previously unreleased song – “Problem” . Also, the band surprised the audience by playing new versions of two memorable songs from Satellite’s repertoire – “Don’t Walk Away in Silence” and “Is It Over” – as also a classic Collage song “Living in the Moonlight”.

The concert at the Theatre was also a special event for the band themselves. Strawberry Fields' singer Robin comments: "Silesian Theatre in Katowice is a beautiful venue, magical even. The atmosphere of that place perfectly fit and contributed to the mood of that evening. The live DVD shows a different side of Strawberry Fields than what you can find on 'River's Gone Dry'. First and foremost, this is because we're harmonious as a band, our mutual energy keeps us going and we really enjoy playing live. Most of the songs were re-arranged into live versions. It is owing to this that the band became more consistent, its character was defined better. We hope that 'Live Strawberry Fields' will let people look at Strawberry Fields from a different perspective... that it will let them see it as a 'band'. For me, the greatest pleasure was performing Satellite's and Collage's songs. I was genuinely touched. Of course, it's not the same as hearing the original versions, it's merely a substitute, but it's enough to allow for a sentimental journey back in time."

You can find a preview of “Live Strawberry Fields” DVD on Metal Mind's official profile on YouTube. Track “Flow” is available in THIS location.

The release date of “Live Strawberry Fields” DVD is scheduled for February, 13th in Europe and March, 20th in USA (via MVD).

Tracklist:

1. Open Your Eyes
2. Close
3. Fool
4. Maybe
5. River’s Gone Dry

10. Don’t Walk Away in Silence (Satellite cover)

Here is what others are saying about Rock Icons & Metal Gods author Jeb Wright:

“I always enjoy talking to a fellow lover of all things classic rock, and someone who shares such a passion for music. Jeb and Classic Rock Revisited.com have always been supportive of my projects and I enjoy the site as a great resource for much of the music I love.” - Eddie Trunk, Host/Co-Producer “That Metal Show” VH1 Classic

“The treasure trove this book offers rock and metal fans the chance to mine is solid gold, from the stars to the substance contained within his interviews, we were proud to publish this collection of material I know will be a hit with music fans everywhere!” - Jake Brown, Publisher Rock N Roll Books

"I've known Jeb Wright for a while now and have enjoyed our conversations over the years. His questions, although sometimes piercing, are extremely insightful and bring out the very best in an interview.” - Bill Ward, Black Sabbath

"At a time when the genre was almost universally panned by journalists all over the country, Jeb's web site was the lone bastion of support for our music. At first I wasn't sure. Who was this vintage rebel? But as time passed and we talked a bit, and hung out backstage a few times, I got it. This Jeb dude and his Classic Rock Revisited were the genuine deal. At this point Jeb is part of the REO extended family, and he got there the old school way, just like the bands he loves, by hard work, persistence, and belief in his mission."

- Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon
