MASTODON's BRENT HINDS Working On 'Really Eerie' And 'Very Spooky-Sounding' New Music

Progressive metallers MASTODON have commenced the songwriting process for the follow-up to last year's "The Hunter", and the band hopes to begin recording the new CD just after the start of 2013.

Speaking to MTV Hive, MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds states: "We've never put out an album a year. That would be unlike us, so maybe we could tour for another year on 'The Hunter'. It's very possible."

Regarding the sound of the new MASTODON music he is pumping out, Hinds states: "A lot of the stuff I'm writing is in open G-minor. I'm playing a lot of slide guitar and just getting really Jimmy Page-y on the place and getting really eerie and RADIOHEAD-ish and very spooky-sounding."

According to Hinds, he has thus far come up with three new songs, but he points out, "It
could be one gigantic one. I haven't made up my mind yet." His bandmates are also compiling ideas, something that is par for the course for the
Atlanta-based act. "Those dudes are always working," Hinds says of the rest of the band. "There's never really a shortage of music with MASTODON because all of us are working on something musically. I'm in good
company. Just because they might [see me] stand in the middle of the
stage or something, people might think this is the leader. He must
conduct everything, but we're all the leaders. We spread the weight
around."

"The Hunter" was released by Reprise Records in September 2011.

MASTODON was among the nominees for the 54th annual Grammy Awards, which was held on February 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The band's Grammy nomination was for "Curl Of The Burl", the first single from "The Hunter".
